The story behind the song

"Cant Get There from Here," from R.E.M.'s 1985 album Fables of the Reconstruction, is an "oddball" song that blends southern funk with Peter Buck's signature chiming guitar. It's notable for being the first R.E.M. song to feature a horn section, adding to its unique sound. The lyrics even mention the small town of Philomath, Georgia, grounding the song in a specific sense of place. At its heart, it plays like a journey into the unexpected, where familiar sounds meet new textures.
