Privacy Policy

Free Chord Book ("Free Chords", "we", "us") operates https://www.free-chords.com and related mobile apps. This policy explains what information is collected when you use our website or native apps, and how it is used.

Summary

  • We do not require an account to use Free Chords.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not process payments — the service is free.
  • Song search and chord content are fetched from our API; favorites and Learn Hub progress are stored on your device unless you opt into future cloud sync.

Information we collect

Usage analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site — for example, which pages are viewed and general interaction events (such as sharing a song). GA4 may collect device and browser information, approximate location (derived from IP), and anonymized usage metrics. You can limit analytics through your browser settings or ad/analytics opt-out tools provided by Google.

Local device storage

To improve your experience, we store preferences and progress on your device using browser or app local storage, including:

  • Favorite songs and display settings (transpose, font size, theme preferences)
  • Learn Hub lesson progress and onboarding choices

This data stays on your device unless you clear app/site data or we introduce optional cloud sync in a future update (which would require separate consent).

Microphone (guitar tuner only)

The built-in guitar tuner uses your device microphone to detect pitch. Audio is processed locally in your browser or app for tuning — we do not record, store, or transmit microphone audio to our servers. You can deny microphone permission; the rest of the app remains usable without the tuner.

Network requests

When you search for songs or open a chord sheet, your device sends requests to our servers (hosted on Railway) to retrieve song metadata and content. These requests may include search terms, song IDs, and standard server logs (IP address, user agent, timestamps) used for security and reliability.

Native mobile apps

Our iOS and Android apps load the same website inside a secure WebView pointed at https://www.free-chords.com. The privacy practices above apply equally to the apps. App stores may collect separate download and crash data according to their own policies.

Third-party links

Song pages may link to external services (for example YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Music). Those services have their own privacy policies. We do not control third-party sites.

Children

Free Chords is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Data retention

Server logs are retained only as long as needed for operations and security. Local favorites and Learn progress remain on your device until you clear storage or uninstall the app.

Your choices

  • Clear site data or uninstall the app to remove locally stored favorites and progress.
  • Deny microphone access if you do not use the tuner.
  • Use browser privacy settings or analytics opt-outs to limit GA4 collection.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest revision. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
