The story behind the song

"Fall On Me" began as an environmental anthem, specifically addressing acid rain, with its chorus line "Don't fall on me" directly referencing this concern. However, as the song evolved for R.E.M.'s 1986 album Lifes Rich Pageant, its meaning broadened to encompass a more general sense of oppression. The band, known for their distinctive jangle guitar and often cryptic lyrics, transitioned to a more accessible sound with this track. Interestingly, the original acid rain-inspired melody and lyrics can still be heard in the counter-melody of the second verse. It plays like a plea against overwhelming forces, both environmental and societal.
