Co-written by Withers and Skip Scarborough, the track features a sustained note by Withers near its end, which, at 18 seconds, is the longest in any U.S. Top 40 hit. The original 1977 version was arranged and produced by Clarence McDonald, who also played keyboards. Ray Parker Jr. played guitars, Jerry Knight played bass, and Russ Kunkel played drums on the recording.
