The story behind the song

"Lately" is a piano ballad that delves into the painful experience of a lover's infidelity. The song voices a deep sexual suspicion, as Stevie Wonder recounts his female lover's unfaithfulness. He begins with a restrained vocal performance, gradually building in intensity until his voice strengthens, conveying a feeling on the verge of utter despair. This track, recorded for his 1980 album Hotter than July, captures the raw emotion of betrayal and heartache. Playing it means channeling that slow burn of suspicion turning into a heartbreaking realization.
