The Fugees' version of "Killing Me Softly" was the last song they recorded for their album The Score, suggested by member Pras. They approached the song by creating break beats, taking inspiration from A Tribe Called Quest, and adding a bass reggae drop. The Fugees initially wanted to change the lyrics to reflect anti-drug and anti-poverty themes, but the original songwriters declined. This take on the song, featuring Lauryn Hill on lead vocals, blends percussive rhythms, a synth sitar sound, and Wyclef's chants. It plays like a powerful reinterpretation, infusing a classic with their distinct hip-hop and R&B fusion.
