The story behind the song

This song emerged from a lonely, drunken evening and a breakdown of sorts for songwriter Thom Yorke, who described it as "the product of a joke that wasn't really a joke." He found the lyrics, including the part about polystyrene, to be funny, and they came to him without being forced, as he simply recorded what was going on in his head. The final version of this track from the 1995 album The Bends was influenced by American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. At its heart, it plays like a raw, unvarnished look at a moment of emotional vulnerability.
