Tom Waits is known for his gravelly voice and lyrics that often explore society's underbelly, creating three-dimensional characters who are adrift or downtrodden. His music, while rooted in the 1970s folk scene, has since drawn from a wide range of genres including blues, jazz, and vaudeville. "Lonely" fits into this world, embodying the kind of poignant, character-driven storytelling that defines his work. It’s a song that invites you to step into the quiet, often overlooked corners of life, feeling the weight and texture of solitude.
