"Badfish" delves into the struggle of being in the working class, with lyrics that resonated deeply with the band's hometown of Long Beach, California. The song also serves as a poignant reflection on the lead singer's battle with heroin, reportedly informed by the slang term "Badfish" and his efforts to resist trying the drug. Originally recorded in 1989 and appearing on their 1992 debut album 40oz. to Freedom, its sound was heavily influenced by reggae music. The song's introduction, a field recording from a local bar, further grounds it in its LBC roots. Playing this song can feel like stepping into a gritty, honest narrative of everyday struggles and personal demons.
