This song tells the story of someone who has given up on the idea of love, trying to live without it to avoid rejection. However, they eventually meet a person who changes their perspective, becoming their "only exception" to this belief. The lyrics also touch on the desire to pursue a relationship and make it last, capturing the vulnerability of wanting proof that a connection isn't just a dream. It's a departure from Paramore's usual darker material, offering a softer, more reflective sound. At its heart, it plays like a ballad of hope found in unexpected love.
