Bicycle Race
The story behind the song
This song was inspired by watching the 1978 Tour de France, with lyrics that pack in a wide range of social, political, and pop culture references from the time, including films, fictional characters, and even the band's own song "Fat Bottomed Girls." Despite its title, the song is not autobiographical, and the writer was not a particular fan of bicycling. Featured on the 1978 album Jazz, the song is known for its unusual chord progression, changing meter, and a solo played with bicycle bells. It plays like a whirlwind tour through the cultural landscape of its era.
