And So It Goes
The story behind the song
This song emerged from the end of a relationship, written in 1983 about a romance that, though brief, left a significant mark. Its lyrics delve into the complexities of love and separation, inspired in part by the traditional Scottish ballad "Barbara Allen." The musical arrangement on the 1989 album version, where Billy Joel performs all instrumentation himself, creates a very personal and intimate atmosphere. At its heart, it plays like a quiet reflection on the inevitable ebb and flow of connections between people.
