This song is a deep dive into environmentalism and humanity's place in the universe, exploring themes of destruction and the mysterious nature of the ocean as both a "big organic toilet" and a mythological realm. It also touches on humanity's relationship with the divine, weaving in references to biblical numerology with lines like "If man is five/then the Devil is six/and God is seven." The central hook, "this monkey's gone to heaven," was conceived by frontman Black Francis long before the rest of the song, forming the basis for its compelling meditation on God and garbage. Featured on the 1989 album Doolittle, it was the first Pixies song to include guest musicians, with cellists and violinists adding to its unique sound. Playing it feels like grappling with big questions about our impact on the world and our connection to something larger than ourselves.
