"Sinnerman" is a powerful spiritual song that delves into the desperate plea of a sinner trying to escape divine judgment. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone attempting to hide from justice on Judgment Day, seeking refuge from the inevitable. Nina Simone, known as the High Priestess of Soul for her genre-spanning music and expressive, jazz-like singing, recorded her extended version of this song in 1965. Her rendition brings a profound intensity to the traditional spiritual, highlighting the raw emotion of fear and repentance. It plays like a dramatic chase, embodying the universal human struggle with accountability.
