The story behind the song

"Sugaree" is a song with lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Jerry Garcia, appearing on Garcia's 1972 solo album. The song's title echoes Elizabeth Cotten's earlier song "Shake Sugaree," which Hunter was aware of when writing. It plays like a soulful, wandering narrative, touching on themes of longing and perhaps a farewell. At its heart, it's a journey into a hazy, dreamlike emotional landscape.
