The story behind the song

"Grade Nine" comes from Barenaked Ladies' debut studio album, Gordon, released in 1992. The band is known for combining pop and rock songwriting with acoustic arrangements, vocal harmonies, and lyrics that move between humor and more serious subjects. This song, like much of their early work, was crafted after their independently released The Yellow Tape found significant success, allowing them to record with a clear vision for their sound. It plays like a glimpse into the band's distinctive blend of musicality and lyrical personality.
