Despite its joyous melody and upbeat title, "Happy Together" by The Turtles tells a story of unrequited love. The lyrics explore a yearning for a shared happiness that isn't quite reciprocated, even as the music soars with optimism. Written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, the song was eventually recorded by The Turtles, who were looking for a hit to turn their career around. The way the song shifts from a minor key in the verses to a major key in the chorus perfectly captures this blend of longing and hopeful dreaming. Playing it, you can feel both the ache of desire and the bright, almost defiant, joy of imagining a world where love is truly mutual.
