The story behind the song

This song delves into themes of social and political awareness, continuing a direction the band had begun exploring. The lyrics were partly inspired by the songwriter's personal experiences of being taunted in his hometown due to his appearance. It was recorded as Depeche Mode aimed to evolve past an earlier "teenybopper" image, seeking a more serious musical identity. Released in 1984 as a single from their album Some Great Reward, it captures a feeling of looking at the divisions between people and wondering why.
