The story behind the song

This song, appearing on the 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets, draws its lyrics from a book of Chinese poetry from the Tang dynasty, lending it a contemplative and ancient feel. The title itself comes from a 1965 novel, further deepening its evocative imagery. It features a unique drum part played with timpani mallets, contributing to its distinct sound. Notably, this is the only Pink Floyd song to include contributions from all five band members, with both David Gilmour and Syd Barrett on guitar. Playing this song feels like embarking on a cosmic journey, guided by poetic whispers from the past.
