The story behind the song

This song tells the story of a man who has lost love and is trying to hide his true feelings. The lyrics explore the idea of not showing emotion, particularly for an English boy, even when it's difficult to conceal. Written by band members Michael Dempsey, Robert Smith, and Lol Tolhurst, it was released in 1979 as a stand-alone single. At its heart, it plays like an anthem for bottling up feelings, even when they threaten to burst.
