"Father Figure" emerged from an accidental studio moment when a planned mid-tempo dance track transformed into something "dreamy" and "spacey" after the snare drum was removed from the mix. This unexpected shift inspired George Michael to build the rest of the song around this unique atmosphere, resulting in what he considered the most original-sounding piece on his debut album, Faith. It's an R&B ballad that weaves in elements of Egyptian and gospel music, creating a rich and evocative sound. Playing it feels like stepping into a deeply atmospheric and intimate musical space.
