The story behind the song

"R.E.M." is an R&B song with a doo-wop beat that explores the blurred lines between dream and reality in a relationship. The title itself refers to rapid eye movement sleep, hinting at the song's core theme of "dreaming someone into your life." Ariana Grande has described it as one of her favorite tracks from her album Sweetener. Originally a demo titled "Dream," Grande kept the chorus but changed the song's bridge, making it her own.
