John Denver was one of the selected people to go into space with NASA's space shuttle program in 1986.
After one year of training together with the other ones selected, in the week before the take-off John was
called and he was told an extra crew member would go with meaning there wasn't enough room for John.
Furious as he was he still watched the live broadcast of the space shuttle take off.
Then in 73 seconds after the laucnch the space shuttle exploded, killing every one in the shuttle.
After this disaster John wrote this song...
