This song explores the delicate question of whether a relationship can transform from romance back into friendship. It captures that moment of uncertainty and hope after a breakup, wondering if the connection is strong enough to survive in a new form. The track, co-written by Justin Bieber, BloodPop, Justin Tranter, and Julia Michaels, was teased with the line "Can we still be friends," setting the stage for its central theme. It plays like a heartfelt plea for understanding and a desire to preserve a bond, even if it's no longer romantic.
