The story behind the song

"To Wish Impossible Things" comes from The Cure's 1992 album Wish, an album that balanced their signature gothic rock mood with a lighter, guitar-driven alternative rock sound. The band, fronted by Robert Smith, had by this point become known for an increasingly dark and tormented style that nonetheless incorporated pop elements. This song, appearing on an album that featured shifts in the band's lineup, embodies the atmospheric depth The Cure is known for. It plays like a reflection on desires that may forever remain out of reach.
