The story behind the song

"Everybody Knows" is a song that cuts deep, exploring themes of social problems, relationships, and religion with a somber tone. It's described as "bitterly pessimistic" yet also funny, and even a "bleak prophecy about the end of the world as we know it." The lyrics repeatedly emphasize the title, driving home the idea that certain harsh truths, like "the dice are loaded" and "the good guys lost," are universally understood. This song, from Cohen's album I'm Your Man, invites you to channel a sense of world-weary wisdom and sharp observation.
