The story behind the song

"This Charming Man" delves into themes of sexual ambiguity and desire, with lyrics that aim to evoke a more coded and self-aware underground scene. The song's writer felt detached from the early 1980s gay culture and wanted to express a male voice that was vulnerable and manipulable, moving away from a dominant machismo. The music, featuring a jangly guitar riff, was specifically crafted to be upbeat and in a major key. At its heart, the song plays like a wistful exploration of identity and longing.
