The story behind the song

This song draws its core idea from a poem Thom Yorke wrote in college, where he imagined himself as an alien observing humanity. It also took inspiration from an experience Yorke had hitting a bird while driving. Originally a "folky" acoustic piece, it evolved into the version heard on OK Computer, with Jonny Greenwood composing the intro, chorus, and outro, and Yorke writing the verses. The band used electric keyboards to evoke a sound reminiscent of Miles Davis's jazz album Bitches Brew. At its heart, it plays like an outsider's reflection on the human experience.
