This song delves into the simple pleasure of staying in bed, a theme directly inspired by John Lennon's own habits of spending non-touring days sleeping, reading, or watching television. A friend even noted his remarkable ability to sleep almost indefinitely, describing him as perhaps the laziest person in England. The lyrics capture this joy, pushing back against interpretations of drug euphoria. It features a unique backwards lead guitar part, a pioneering technique for pop music at the time. At its heart, "I'm Only Sleeping" celebrates the quiet, unhurried bliss of a day spent in repose.
