This song began as an ode to Paul McCartney's travels with his then-girlfriend, Linda Eastman. However, as The Beatles faced their eventual breakup, it evolved into a gesture of affection for John Lennon, reflecting their shared history and the challenges they were navigating. The lyrics, with lines like "you and I have memories / longer than the road that stretches out ahead," suggest a deep, enduring bond, even amidst contractual troubles. It also pays homage to the harmonious style of the Everly Brothers, an influence on Lennon and McCartney. At its heart, the song captures the bittersweet essence of companionship and shared journeys, both personal and professional.
