The story behind the song

"True Colors" was originally written about the songwriter's mother, though its first verse was later altered. The song's demo was a piano-based gospel ballad, but Cyndi Lauper "completely dismantled" that traditional arrangement to create something "breathtaking and stark" for her 1986 album of the same name. It's a song that celebrates inner beauty and encourages authenticity. Playing it feels like an embrace of one's true self.
