The story behind the song

This song paints a humorous picture of a Texas-style Christmas, far removed from the snowy scenes often found in holiday tunes. It describes a family gathering filled with lively, if a bit chaotic, traditions like drinking, carving a turkey, watching football, and smoking cigarettes. Growing up in Houston, the songwriter experienced Christmases that were warm and humid, inspiring a different kind of holiday story than the traditional carols. It's a look at the unique and sometimes dysfunctional charm of a family celebration.
