"El Rey" tells the story of a macho figure who, despite a rough-and-tumble life, remains convinced of his regal standing among his peers. It's a foundational piece of Ranchera music, famously covered by Vicente Fernández, who is often considered "The King of Ranchera Music" himself. Fernández, a cultural icon, started his career as a busker and became one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists. His rendition of this song captures the defiant spirit of someone who believes in their inherent royalty, no matter the circumstances.
